This wedding at Leeds Met, was a Winter wedding, so the bride and groom really didn’t want to go outside, but while the bride was getting dressed in the morning, the fire alarm went off, so we all had to troop outside, and wait for ages on the pavement opposite the hotel, until the fire services had checked it all out!  Turns out the smoke alarms had been triggered by someone using hairspray – so bear this in mind if you are getting married here! Its a great venue with loads of indoor spaces for interesting wedding pictures!

This year has been one of the wettest I can ever remember, but we have been extremely busy with weddings, so have had to be extra creative on occasions.  All our brides and their families have been marvelous though!

It helps to have a nice indoor alternative if it is too rainy and miserable outside for all the wedding pics. This one is of the bride and bridegroom in the fabulous green bath in the bridal suite at Gomersal Park Hotel in  Gomersal, WestYorkshire

rainy day wedding at Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle wedding on a very rainy day in  August.  It rained when the bride arrived, throughout the ceremony inside the castle, during drinks reception in the keep,  when we left to go to Seahouses for the wedding reception, but gave us a ray of hope as appeared to stop just as the meal was finishing.  We jumped straight into our cars and headed back towards the castle for a private photo shoot, but trust our luck, it started again just as we were approaching the castle!  Kelly &  Charles were very brave to pose for a few snatched shots in the rain, but the camera lenses had drips all over them just a few minutes later and Kelly in her lovely low cut wedding dress was freezing!

A dry evening , after a very wet day, can produce some stunning family group shots, as this one on the helipad at Kings Croft in Pontefract,  West Yorkshire, as we don’t mind how long we stay on the couple’s wedding day,

Our next overseas wedding is on 28 June – in Southern Ireland.  That one is going to be particularly exciting as it’s the first of 3 wedding days – for the same couple –  as they are having the Catholic church wedding in St. Aidans Cathedral in Enniscorthy followed by the reception at Amber Springs Hotel In Gorey, Wexford, then the following week its back to the UK for a civil wedding at Luton Hoo, in Bedfordshire, followed by the final wedding ceremony the week after – a traditional Hindu wedding – in a marquee in St. Albans!  Phew!

Contemporary Sikh wedding photography by female wedding photographer Elaine

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Sikh bride’s foot decorated with henna and red-gold glitter Sikhs are very exuberant and friendly people, with a zest for life and dancing all night at their 3 day wedding celebrations. Add to that a French Bridegroom and a multicultural marriage with a Sikh bride who has absorbed much of the European culture of her UK upbringing, with guests arriving from all around the world – from USA, Canada and France, in particular – and its bound to be a wedding with a difference! From the wedding photographer it demands a non-stop smile, and whirlwind eye, who easily gets caught up in the excitement and drama of the days – and nights.

Nina & Alexis met in Sri Lanka when doing voluntary work after the fateful Tsunami of 30 Dec 2004. They share the same generous view of humanity, as does Alexis French mother & sister, who were living out there too.

The wedding started with a Civil marriage ceremony at Hothorpe Hotel in Leicester. Two days earlier I had been in Australia, so the sudden plunge into late British Winter was expected to make us all suffer, but as it happened the cold was overcome by the brilliant sunshine and unreal blue skies!

The Sikh wedding celebrations started the following evening at Stage Hotel in Leicester, where traditional Jug lanterns were carried in turn by many of the bride’s key family members – even the French bridegroom’s Mother Agnes, enjoyed a turn – to announce the forthcoming Sikh wedding celebrations to the “Village” (in this case it was just the invited guests…)

contemporary creative wedding photography

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

For 30 years –  before becoming a full time wedding photographer – I was a fine artist, painting in oils and sketching portraits for a living.  Those who know me find it hard to believe that I have just stopped painting and am now merely a photographer  – as was my Grandfather and Great Grandfather before me, and my son, Naki contemporaneously: see  www.nakiphotography.co.uk . Well, I have simplyly changed art forms, as when not under the pressure of high season weddings every week I can re-visit digital negatives that have been mentally earmarked for a treat, to bring out the hidden beauty that I observed at the time, but which lay dormant and invisible to anyone else.

Moody Mists on Dartmoor wedding photograph

These two examples were from Mel & Jay’s wedding in Dartmoor.  It was rained solidly on their wedding  day, so having travelled hundreds of miles to get there, I was quite happy to stay an extra day to get the magical shots we all  wanted.  Jay is  apparantly friends with David Bailey so I was up against fierce competition and high expectations…

Mel calls herself the Witch of Dartmoor in her emails, so I wanted to come up with something similarly evocative…

This picture is from a wedding at Monk Fryston Hotel near York, that I didn’t spot amongst the hundred we took that day, but which the bride chose for her album.  I have changed it to a monochrome duplex colour tint to focus on the intimacy of the private exchange between loved relatives.

This picture is from a tropical wedding in Tenerife, where night falls like a stone soon after 7.30 pm every night , all year round. I have continued the mood into the bordering frame, as stark black lacked the softness of romantic love.

This one didn’t need anything doing to it as the colour and the mood were already in the eye of the camera  and matched my vision too.
